Healthy Halloween Treats for the littles...and a not so healthy Halloween treat for the adults

Let me start by saying I am not one of those people who hands out apples on Halloween. In fact, I think kids should get to experience going door to door and getting as much candy as possible. And their parents should of course "look it over" to take all the good stuff

But Halloween isn't just a few hours of trick-or-treating anymore. Halloween parades, parties at school, parties at friends houses... One night of candy is one thing.... but a week of being jacked up on sugar is a little overboard if you ask me.

So to not be a complete Halloween scrooge I put together some recipes that are still FESTIVE but won't leave your kids acting like they're possessed or your pants fitting too tight 😉

Here's a quick and easy one that is PERFECT for Halloween parties at school!!

Jack-O-Lantern Fruit Cups

Use Naval oranges to make these smiling jack-O-lantern faces. Slice off the tops of the oranges, scoop out the pulp. Use a paring knife to cut out the jack-o-lantern faces. Fill with grapes and/or mixed berries.

PS - Save the pulp for the next recipe!

"Candy Corn" Mason Jar Fruit Cups

Layer banana or pineapple on the bottom of the Mason jar. Cover with a layer of oranges (this is where you can use the pulp from the first recipe). Top with greek yogurt - or whip cream for a real treat!

Apple Peanut Butter Teeth

Start by cutting the apples into this slices. Put 1-2 teaspoons of all natural peanut butter on each apple slice. Place a row of mini marshmallows across one apple slice. Take a second slice and sandwich them together. Press firmly until the marshmallows stick and you have teeth!

And of course... something for the adults!! Whether you're throwing a Halloween party, headed to one, or just need an excuse to try a new cocktail ;) Check out this scrumptious sangria.

Caramel Apple Sangria

1 bottle of white wine

8 cups fresh apple cider

1 cup unflavored or caramel vodka

4-5 apples, chopped

1/4 cup caramel syrup (plus a little more for garnishing)

Place the chopped apples in the bottom of a large pitcher. Drizzle the caramel syrup over the apples. Add the wine, cider and vodka and stir. Use a crisp sweet white wine. Don't bother with any fancy (we're not fancy around here). A crisp pinot or a semi-sweet riesling would be perfect!

Refrigerate at least 4 hours, or overnight before serving.

When you're ready to serve, swirl the extra caramel syrup around the inside of the glass. Fill your glass with chilled sangria, including the the chopped apples.

Enjoy. Cheers!!
